Sparrow appointed Legislative Advisor to Minister of Mines and Energy

Rex Gibbons, Minister of Mines and Energy announced today that Anthony Sparrow, MHA for Placentia & St. Mary's, has been appointed the Legislative Advisor to the Minister.

Since INCO announced on November 29, 1996, that the smelter/refinery complex will be located in Argentia, residents of the area have been anxious to obtain more information on how they may become involved in the project. "It's important that the lines of communication remain open and everyone concerned receive full and accurate details about the opportunities arising from the construction and operation of the Argentia complex," says Gibbons. "The Government feels the best way to ensure these people obtain the information they need is to include the MHA in the process."

Sparrow says he is delighted with this development and will use his new position to help meet the needs of the people of Placentia and St. Mary's. "I want to ensure that the men and women of Placentia and St. Mary's are not overlooked when it comes to opportunities for the area," says Sparrow.

The INCO smelter/refinery complex will be operational within three years, which will mean job opportunities for area residents. Sparrow says he wants to ensure that the people of his district are prepared when these opportunities arise which will mean getting additional training and work experience. "Employment potential is great for the area, but people must be prepared to learn new skills and be willing to constantly upgrade their training," cautioned Sparrow.

Mr. Sparrow says he believes that his appointment will help guide the tremendous changes that are going to be brought forth by the smelter/refinery complex. Sparrow has an office in the Department of Mines and Energy in order to carry out these duties.
