Minister presents export awards

Charles J. Furey, Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology, presented the 1996 Newfoundland and Labrador Export Awards yesterday to this year's recipients.

Winners were announced during the 13th annual Newfoundland and Labrador Export Awards Ceremony in February. Awards were accepted by: Gerry Smith of the Brookfield Dairy Group, the winner in the large manufacturing category; Paul Antle of SCC Environmental Inc. for the category of large service company; Terry Crane of C&W Fabrication and Marine Equipment Ltd. for the small business manufacturing category; and Joe Ryan of Sigma Engineering Ltd. for the category of small business service.

The Export Awards recognize the contribution of companies exporting services and manufactured products from Newfoundland and Labrador. According to Mr. Furey, export awards acknowledge the success that Newfoundland and Labrador companies are having on the international level. "When you consider the scope of export products and the range of destinations, the export business in Newfoundland and Labrador has a great future," says Furey. "The export successes of the companies receiving awards today ensure a place for this province in the global economy."

The plaques received by the recipients were designed by Newfoundland artist Ray Will. They consist of a pewter carving mounted on slate mined in Newfoundland. Mr Will titled the piece "Spirit of Newfoundland Export." He says that the carving is circular to represent the globe with the map of Newfoundland and Labrador and a humpback whale inside. "I chose our most spectacular whale, the humpback, as a symbol of that part of Newfoundland and Labrador that ranges around the world," says Will.

"Newfoundland and Labrador businesses are looking beyond provincial borders," says Mr. Furey. "Our highly capable entrepreneurs give us the advantage we need to compete and win in international markets."
