Contingency plan in place for social assistance cheques

A contingency plan is in place for social assistance recipients to receive their cheques in light of the Canada Post labour dispute, Human Resources and Employment Minister Julie Bettney announced today.

"Although no strike action has been taken yet, our department felt it necessary to proceed with a contingency plan to ensure that clients receive their benefits in a timely manner," said Ms. Bettney.

Each district office has designated pick-up sites within their communities. Clients will be able to pick up their mid-month cheques at the designated site on Friday, November 14.

Clients are asked to pick up their own cheques and to bring along their drug card and one other piece of identification. Only under special circumstances will others be permitted to pick up a cheque on a client's behalf. If any client is unable to personally pick up their cheque, they are asked to please call the district office to make alternative arrangements.

"Each of the district offices will be issuing further details on specific sites and times in each community," said Ms. Bettney. People should contact their district offices for further details.
