$200,000 Child Care Initiative

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Human Resources and Employment, announced today that $200,000 has been allocated for child care subsidies for low income families, particularly single parents who have demonstrated a need for financial assistance in the purchasing of day care.

"This measure will provide child care for up to 100 children and families," said the minister. "It will also build a bridge to future programs and services which may be provided through the National Child Benefit."

The Child Care Initiative will help children of employable parents who need child care and children with actual learning disabilities that with early intervention may not need more long-term follow up. The new funding initiative will be implemented as of April 1997.

This new program will expand services to low income families and will assist the Department of Human Resources and Employment to meet the needs by addressing the current waiting list of children for this program.
