$ 4.5 Million for Student Employment Programs

Pierre S. Pettigrew, federal Minister of Human Resources Development, and Joan Marie Aylward, Newfoundland Minister of Human Resources and Employment, announced today a $4.5 million Student Employment Program. The $4 million funding will be available to post- secondary students through the Student Work and Services Program (SWASP). This component is cost-shared 50/50 by the federal and provincial governments. The $0.5 million Special Student Program will be funded by the provincial government and will provide employment for high school students.

"We need to provide our youth with opportunities to continue their education. These programs will provide them with work experience and help defray the cost of their post-secondary education," said Minister Pettigrew.

"I am pleased we could find the funding to support students through programs which have proven successful in the past," said Minister Aylward. "This money will help approximately 2,600 post-secondary students and over 400 high school students this year."

The SWASP allows post-secondary students to work in their communities while earning salaries and tuition vouchers for future education. These vouchers can be used at all recognized post-secondary institutions in the province. The Special Student Program will provide high school students with employment to help them prepare for post- secondary education.
