The following is being distributed at the request of Community Health Western:

Working together with its partners

In November 1996, community consultations were carried out as part of the Healthy Western Region Project. Representatives from all communities spoke to the need for more mental health and addictions services, especially in rural Newfoundland. Community Health Western has been working with multiple partners to meet these needs.

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Health, recently transferred additional funds to the Western Newfoundland Community Health Board. "The Department of Health supports and encourages the development of partnerships amongs regional health boards and the communities they serve. By working together, we can continue to improve the quality of health services we offer to the rural areas of the province."

Community Health Western is excited about several recent partnerships which will result in increased service provision to the residents of Western Newfoundland.

In Deer Lake, Community Health Western is partnering with the District #3 School Board to provide space in the old Deer Lake school board office. This space is the location of two new positions: a Mental Health Counsellor and an Addictions Counsellor. These new positions service the Deer Lake, White Bay and Northern Peninsula areas. The new Community Health Western location is also the offices for Public Health Nursing/Continuing Care and the school board's Psychologist, Speech-Language Pathologist and Computer Specialist. An Open House will be held in Deer Lake on November 18 from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. All are welcome.

Community Health Western is also partnering with Community Health St. John's to provide access to a toll-free Mental Health Crisis Line for the residents of Western Newfoundland. Once in operation, residents requiring this service will have 24 hour access to a Mental Health counsellor through a 1-888 telephone number.

Community Health Western is also partnering with a Self Help Group for Female Survivors of Sexual Abuse. The funds will enable the group to purchase resources and provide outreach to individuals and communities. The group currently operates out of Corner Brook.

Community Health Western looks forward to continuing to work with all its partners to enhance service to the communities we serve.
