Consumer Advisory - Vanity Plates

The Department of Government Services and Lands advises that there are conditions respecting vanity plates used on the front of vehicles.

Effective April 1, 1997, a one plate, one sticker program was introduced for vehicles with plates beginning with the letters A, D, H, M, T, V, or W.

The Highway Traffic Act states: "A person is guilty of an offence who uses or permits the use of a marker or number plate upon a motor vehicle capable of being confused with the identification plate or marker of a vehicle issued or prescribed for the vehicle."

This would prohibit the use of old Newfoundland and Labrador plates, plates from other provinces or states, or plates that would resemble or could be mistaken for a licence plate. The use of a vanity plate that cannot be confused with a licence plate is permitted.

The department also points out that the one licence plate program does not apply to pickup trucks.
