October 3, 1997 ATV use while hunting Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, and Ernest McLean, Minister of Government Services and Lands, said today that there still appears to be confusion with respect to regulations regarding ATV use. Media reports in late August and early September left some hunters with the impression that they could use their ATVs for the purpose of retrieving big game. These reports were misleading. There have been no changes to legislation governing the use of ATVs, and restrictions established in 1994 limiting the use of the vehicles to approved areas and established trails are still in effect. Mr. Aylward said: "It would be very unfortunate for any individual to have their hunting excursions marred through enforcement actions as a result of this misunderstanding." Mr. McLean said: "Any changes to these regulations will be duly publicized to ensure complete public awareness. No changes to the legislation pertaining to ATVs are anticipated in the near future." All hunters should be advised that departmental staff will be monitoring activities, including the use of ATVs, and any violations of the regulations will be addressed accordingly.
