Increased Fines for Drivers who Operate Vehicles without Insurance

Ernest McLean, Minister of Government Services and Lands, said today that his department intends to seek an amendment to The Highway Traffic Act to increase the fine for driving without insurance.

The intent is to increase the fine from the present $450 minimum to $1,260 maximum to $1,000 minimum to $3,000 maximum.

Mr. McLean said: "Motorists who currently operate their vehicles without insurance must get the clear message that government will not tolerate this practice.

"Motorists who drive without insurance are responsible for many direct and indirect costs to society including care of injured persons, use of fire and emergency rescue personnel, and repair to vehicles.

"Government, members of the general public, and motorists who comply with the rules do not want uninsured drivers on our roads. Complying motorists, as well, often see offenders as getting away without having to pay their fair share of insurance costs."
