New Government Service Centre to open in Labrador City/Wabush

A new Government Service Centre in Labrador West is expected to be in operation by the end of September. Ernest McLean, Minister of Government Services and Lands and Minister Responsible for Labrador, and Perry Canning, MHA - Labrador West, said today that government will call tenders this week for approximately 5,000 square feet of leased space for the new centre.

The service centre will provide space for a number of departments and agencies which provide walk-in services and information to the general public and businesses. These departments and agencies include the Department of Government Services and Lands (Motor Vehicle Registration); the Department of Development and Rural Renewal; the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation; the Hyron Regional Economic Development Board and the Labrador West Tourism Development Corporation.

Mr. McLean said: "Over the next few months, government officials will meet with the town councils of Labrador City and Wabush and other groups to determine if there are any additional services in Labrador West that might be offered through the centre."

Mr. Canning said: "Government is fully aware of the concerns of the residents of Labrador West and is acting on them. The re-instatement of full motor vehicle registration services in January was an example of this and the new service centre further illustrates government's continued commitment to improve public services."
