Kevin Aylward, minister responsible for agrifoods, is pleased to welcome representatives from all over Atlantic Canada to the Atlantic Farm Business Challenges '97 Forum in Corner Brook on November 20 - 21. This two-day event will feature a wide range of speakers and presentations. "The high level of participation by individual farmers, local and national consultants, various levels of government, as well as the boards and associations for the agriculture sector, will make this an exciting weekend of networking and sharing of ideas," commented the minister.

Farm business management is vital to the success of the industry. To further support development in this area, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, secured a Canada-Newfoundland Farm Business Management Agreement valued at approximately $780,000 over three years, 1996 to 1999. This is an extension and enhancement of the existing Farm Business Management Program for Newfoundland and Labrador. This program will help to expand the farm management culture from its previous emphasis on production to include a more business oriented and market responsive approach.

A major focus of the Farm Business Management Agreement is to sponsor projects which are designed to enhance the ability of farm managers to effectively manage change. As with other provinces across the country, the agricultural industry in Newfoundland and Labrador has changed radically in the past three to five years. The Canada/Newfoundland Farm Business Management Program will ensure that farm managers have the opportunity to gain the skills necessary to manage these changes. Ultimately, this effort should result in a financially stronger, more market oriented sector and in strengthened individual farm operations.

"My department is also initiating an Agriculture Awareness Campaign," said the minister. "Work has recently begun with M5 consultants on this campaign. And we hope to partner with agriculture and industry across the province to create an appreciation, generate support, and inspire investment, in this important economic sector of Newfoundland and Labrador."
