Minister Announces Opening of Bay Of Islands Caribou Extension Zone

Kevin Aylward, Minister responsible for wildlife, announced that effective immediately, the Bay of Islands caribou extension zone will be opened to caribou hunting. The minister has received information that the George River caribou are now heading in a southerly direction towards the Bay of Islands .

"Officials of my department have conducted aerial reconnaissance and report a large number of caribou in the area. In addition, collared animals have been reported within 15 kilometres of the northern boundary of the zone."

The staff of the Wildlife Division will continue to monitor the movement of the George River caribou herd. The minister added: "Hunters are advised that additional areas may be opened as the caribou migration continues. I would like to remind all hunters to apply safe and ethical hunting practices. I wish them enjoyment and success in their hunting pursuits."
