Silviculture project announced for Salmonier Line

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, and Anthony Sparrow MHA - Placentia - St Mary's, announced the award of a contract to St. Mary's Bay North Development Association, under the Provincial Job Creation Program.

The minister stated: "I am pleased to inform the public that the Goodfellow block on the Salmonier Line will be silviculturally treated to remove suppressed trees bringing stands to an acceptable density. This treatment will increase the growth and vitality of the crop and allow for a future crop of young vigorous trees."

Mr. Sparrow added: " I am pleased to be a part of this announcement today. This contract, which is valued at $30,000 will have a positive impact on the district and its people, generating 12 weeks of employment for five people. The work is expected to commence immediately and be completed in late November."

This project is made possible through a commitment of $2.5 million dollars under the provincial government's Employment Initiatives Fund for the development and maintenance of the forest resource and jobs associated with the forest resource.

Government continues to provide strong support to the ongoing silviculture program. For 1997, government announced a total of $12.4 million to be spent on silviculture-related work. This amount represents direct provincial contributions combined with partnership arrangements with the two pulp and paper companies, Abitibi Consolidated Inc. and Corner Brook Pulp and Paper, plus a combination of federal/provincial government investment through the Transitional Job Fund.
