Contract for removal of insect damaged trees near community of Winterland

Judy Foote, MHA - Grand Bank, and Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, are pleased to announce the award of a contract that will permit the removal of non-merchantable insect damaged trees near the community of Winterland, on the Burin Peninsula. The Heritage Development Committee of Winterland has been awarded this contract valued at $40,000.

Ms. Foote stated: "This project will have a positive impact on the community and the forest sector. It will provide 98 person weeks of employment, which equals 14 weeks of employment for seven people in the area. In addition, by removing these tress, the site can be prepared and planted with seedlings to produce a vigorous productive forest."

"This work represents governments commitment to sustainable forest management," Mr. Aylward added. "Stewardship and maintenance of our forests are a long term investment in the future of the forest industry and the people on the Burin Peninsula. The forest has been an important source of employment in the area and silviculture projects will help maintain that."

Work on this project will commence in mid August and should be completed in late November.

This project is made possible through a commitment of $2.5 million under the provincial government's Employment Initiatives Fund for the development and maintenance of the forest resource and the jobs associated with this resource.

Government has continued to provide strong support to the ongoing silviculture program. For 1997, government announced a total of $12.4 million to be spent on silviculture-related work. This amount represents direct provincial contributions combined with partnership arrangements with the two pulp and paper companies, Abitibi Consolidated Inc. and Corner Brook Pulp and Paper, plus a combination of federal/provincial government investment through the Transitional Jobs Fund.
