Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, has announced a change to the hunting season for Area 23 in Central Newfoundland. "After considerable informal consultation with the residents of the area," said Mr. Aylward, "the hunting season for Area 23 will now be restored for both resident and non-resident hunters to an early season beginning September 3 and ending December 13."

In April 1997, a temporary experimental early season for a small portion of Area 23 was introduced to allow one outfitter to accommodate clients in the early part of the season. At that time, the hunting season for Area 23 was late opening, as a result of a change requested by local residents three years ago. The intent of the experiment was to accommodate the needs and desires of each group. However, after various discussions with local hunters and hunting organizations over the summer, there was sufficient representation to return the hunting season to the early dates.

"The early season will be a benefit to the outfitter whose visitors would be more likely to participate in other outdoor activities earlier in the season, such as, hook and release salmon fishing," said Mr. Aylward. "These activities bring in much needed out-of-province dollars into rural Newfoundland."
