Becoming an Outdoors Woman Program scheduled for October

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, announced today that his department has scheduled a second Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) program on Thanksgiving weekend, October 11-13, at Kildevil Lodge, Gros Morne National Park.

"I am pleased to announce that this second offering of BOW will be happening on the west coast of the island," stated the minister. "This program is open to women 18 years of age and older who would like to pursue outdoor activities, but feel that they lack the necessary skills or knowledge. This workshop is designed to remove this barrier for women by offering instruction that will inspire confidence and enjoyment of a wide variety of outdoor activities."

The BOW program began in the United States in 1991, and has expanded to 40 states and eight Canadian provinces. Its goal is to provide opportunity for women to learn skills that enhance and encourage participation in hunting and angling, and non-consumptive outdoor activities.

Mr. Aylward said: "The first program we offered in April, on the Avalon peninsula was a overwhelming success with 82 women in attendance, we are expecting the same level of interest at this session. One of the reasons for this success rate was the partnerships that were created in the development of the Newfoundland program. My department is the primary sponsor, but there has been a great deal of support from local sponsors and volunteers in the province, and we are pleased to have these groups and individuals supporting this program. I urge women who are interested in participating in the BOW program to register early."

The course offerings possibly include; shotgun/trap shooting, camping skills, archery and bow hunting, flyfishing, kayaking/canoeing for beginner, cleaning and handling of game, map and compass skills, firearm handling and safety, outdoor survival, taking kids outdoors, and spirit nature. The cost is $135 for two nights of accommodation, seven meals, and all instruction, and use of demonstration equipment. There are some scholarships available for single mothers or students wishing to participate in the program.

If you require further information or wish to register for the BOW program please contact, Lucy O'Driscoll, (709) 729-6974, or fax (709) 229-7078. Space is limited.
