100 hectares of forest selected for thinning in Lewisporte District

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, announced today that 100 hectares of dense forest near Horwood Road/Jumpers Pond in the Lewisporte District will be thinned to ensure a future crop of young vigorous trees.

The minister stated: "I am pleased to announce that Mews Contractors of Birchy Bay have been awarded a contract valued at $47,000 to carry out this project. This site was harvested approximately 20 years ago and has since regenerated to thickets of black spruce and balsam fir. It is our intention to reduce the stands to 2,500 trees per hectare, and achieve a more healthy forest."

Melvin Penney, MHA - Lewisporte, joined the minister in making this announcement, and added: "This initiative will have a positive impact on the health of our local forest and it will contribute significantly to reforestation in the area. And, in addition, this work will provide six weeks of employment for 15 people in the area."

This project will start in early July and will be complete by mid August.
