June 20, 1997 (Forest Resources and Agrifoods) Site Preparation Project for Island Pond The Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, Beaton Tulk, and the MHA - Trinity North, Doug Oldford, are pleased to announce the award of a contract to prepare 135 hectares of previously damaged and harvested forest for future planting. Quest Inc. of Birchy Bay has been awarded the contract which will employ one person for a six week period. As the minister explained: "The area had previously been decimated by the spruce budworm. Since then, some of the area was cut in the attempt to aid in natural regeneration. When this did not prove successful we decided to adopt more proactive measures by preparing the area for future reforestation." Mr. Oldford added: "I'm pleased with the actions taken by the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods. It's another example of the successful implementation of their far-sighted plans to ensure the success of this province's forests." The project is scheduled to begin on June 16 and will run for a total of six weeks. The $30,759 project will employ 1 person.
