June 10, 1997 (Forest Resources and Agrifoods) Resource Road Extension Project for Lewisporte District The Minister of Forestry Resources and Agrifoods, Beaton Tulk, and Melvin Penny, MHA - Lewisporte, are pleased to announce the award of a contract for the extension of the South Pond Brook resource road, near Glenwood. The contract is valued at $34,700. The successful bid went to D. Byrne & Sons Ltd., of Botwood. They will be responsible for creating a two kilometre extension to the existing resource road, enabling further access to timber on Crown land. The minister said: "We are always pleased when a project such as this one comes along. The forested section we want to make more accessible is located in the central region of an area encircled by communities such as Glenwood, Campbellton, Birchy Bay and Gander. It's important that those involved in the timber industry are assured of access to the resources." Mr. Penny said: "This type of project is much needed to allow commercial operators access to harvest the mature and over mature stands of timber currently inaccessible." The project is slated to begin on June 27 and will run for six weeks. The $34,700 contract will employ eight people.
