"Becoming an Outdoors Woman" program to be held this weekend - April 25 - 27

This weekend, 82 women will participate in the Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) program at the Lavrock Centre on Salmonier Line. "The response to this program was tremendous," said Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister, Beaton Tulk. "This program is about removing barriers and fostering a positive environment for women to participate in outdoor recreational activities they many not have had the opportunity to experience. This enthusiastic response promotes support for Becoming an Outdoors Woman.

The Becoming an Outdoors Woman Program began in 1991 in the United States and is already in 40 states and workshops are now offered in eight Canadian provinces. The goal of the program is to provide opportunities for women to learn skills that enhance and encourage participation in hunting, angling, and other non-consumptive outdoor activities. The program teaches fishing, hunting, shooting, and non- harvest outdoor skills in a non-threatening atmosphere.

"A key to the overwhelming success of the BOW program across North America has been through the building of partners and sponsors." said Mr. Tulk. "My department, as primary sponsor, was successful in building this coalition of local sponsors and volunteers in this province. These are the people who have made this program possible and will re-create a Newfoundland version of the spirit of this program."

The course offerings include: shotgun/trap shooting, camping skills, archery and bow hunting, flyfishing, kayaking/canoeing for the beginner, cleaning and handling game, map and compass skills, firearm handling and safety, outdoor survival, taking kids outdoors, and Spirit Nature. Special guests include Chief Michael Joe and Drummers and Dancers from Conne River. Sessions begin on Friday, April 25 - noon, and wrap up on Sunday, April 27.
