Premier Pays Tribute to the late Jack
Pickersgill
It was with sadness that I learned today of the
passing of Jack Pickersgill, a loss to all of Canada, but
especially to Newfoundland and Labrador. Jack Pickersgill was not
a Newfoundlander by birth, but he became an adopted son of the
province, serving as Member of Parliament for
Bonavista-Twillingate from 1953 to 1967, and as our province's
representative in the federal Cabinet from 1953 to 1957 and from
1963 to 1967.
Jack Pickersgill worked hand in hand with Joey
Smallwood to make the benefits of Confederation a reality for our
province. Together they brought about the great progress achieved
in public services and economic development in the 1950's and
1960's. We all owe a debt of gratitude to this great Canadian for
his record of service to our province and our country. With my
wife, Jodean, I extend condolences to the members of Mr.
Pickersgill's family.
