Details of LIA's land claim agreement released

Premier Brian Tobin today released the details of the LIA's land claim. These details were worked out by senior negotiators of the LIA, the province and the federal government at meetings held in Ottawa last week. All three parties have reviewed and ratified the recent agreement, and work can now begin on finalization of an Agreement-in-Principle (AIP).

"I am delighted that we have made real progress in the settlement of the LIA's land claim," said Premier Tobin. "This agreement is as good as, if not better than, any other modern land claim agreement in the country. Now, the lawyers, financial experts and land claims specialists can begin the process of finalizing the Agreement-in-Principle, and I look forward to seeing the results in the coming months."

The agreement contains details of land quantum, resource revenue sharing, and self-government, among others. The three parties will now work to turn the negotiators' text into the formal AIP.

"Today marks an important and historic step in the land claims process," said the Premier. "The Labrador Inuit Association's approval has created certainty and stability for the future."
