Minister Tulk challenges allegations of favouritism

Government House Leader Beaton Tulk today challenged suggestions by Bob French, Opposition Health Critic, that a west coast company was given preferential treatment and federal government grants because of political connections.

"Mr. French is suggesting that there seems to be something wrong with the manner in which this proposal was handled," said Mr. Tulk. "In fact, Eileen Johnson and Judy Anderson received a funding commitment under the transitional job fund, according to the criteria established by the federal government. This project was deemed to be viable for the Corner Brook area. The proposal was reviewed by a number of federal and provincial government officials, as well as private financial institutions. In fact, the bank provided the vast majority of the financing for this project, which demonstrates their confidence in the viability of this venture. How could anyone influence so many different agencies?"

This home is not considered to be in competition with others in the area, as a study showed that there is a need for additional accommodations for seniors in the area.

"Is Mr. French seriously suggesting that these women can not pursue business in the province, because one of them happens to be married to someone who is active in politics," asked Mr. Tulk. "Is that his view or the view of his party? They should realize this venture will provide a much needed service to seniors in the area, and create a significant number of jobs."

Mr. French has also raised some questions about permits and licences for the project. "Mr. French should know that it is standard practice that approval of funding be subject to a project meeting all the licence, permit and assessment requirements, as this proposal did," said Mr. Tulk.
