Premier pleased Term 17 to be tabled in House of Commons

Premier Brian Tobin, speaking from Ottawa, said today he is pleased that the constitutional amendment to Term 17 will be tabled in the House of Commons on Monday, October 27.

"I am extremely pleased that the revised Term 17 will go before the House of Commons this coming week," said Premier Tobin. "This is the next important step in education reform for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador."

The province held a referendum on September 2, 1997, with 73 per cent of voters favouring a single school system for all children regardless of religious denomination. All 48 members of the House of Assembly unanimously voted in favour of the proposed new Term 17 on September 5.

"I am looking forward to speedy passage of this amendment at the federal level," said the Premier. "The people of the province have indicated their wishes, and I am sure federal representatives will do their best to abide by those wishes."
