Premier calls on Fisheries Committee to hold post-TAGS hearings
in Newfoundland and Labrador

Premier Brian Tobin has called upon the House of Commons Standing Committee on fisheries, chaired by M.P. George Baker, to hold public hearings in Newfoundland and Labrador on the future of post-TAGS programming.

"Mr. Baker and his committee are strongly positioned to give the federal government good advice on future assistance to the fishing industry. For the moment what we have is the federal Department of Human Resources Development reviewing itself. While I welcome that exercise at an official level, I also think it important to have those with elected responsibilities provide a forum for fishermen and plant workers in Atlantic Canada to be heard," said the Premier.

Mr. Tobin said Mr. Baker, who in addition to being Chairman of the Fisheries Committee is also Chairman of the Atlantic Liberal Caucus, "is the person best qualified to give advice on post-TAGS programming. George Baker has a tremendous knowledge of rural Newfoundland and Labrador. I think the Government of Canada should be looking to George and his Committee as the primary source of advice on how to proceed in assisting the fishing industry at this time."
