Premier gives more detail on Atlantic Vision conference in Moncton

Premier Tobin today advised that he will lead a delegation of representatives from the private and public sector to the Atlantic Vision conference in Moncton later this week. Canada's four Atlantic premiers hope to present a vision of the future of Atlantic Canada as a dynamic region within Canada, as a basis to support and guide additional strategic investments tailored to the specific strategies and opportunities of the four Atlantic provinces.

Four of the business representatives will have the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion where they will address the economic state of their particular sector, and explain current trends in Newfoundland and Labrador. The four panellists include:

- Derrick Rowe, President and CEO, Stratos Global Corporation who will address ocean industries as it relates to Information Technology and Atlantic Futures;

- Vic Young, Chairman and CEO, Fishery Products International Ltd. who will address Value Adding in the Resource Economy as it relates to fisheries and aquaculture;

- Derek Locke, Managing Director, Maxxim Vacations who will discuss Tourism - The Atlantic Adventure; and

- Art May, O.C., President and Vice-Chancellor, Memorial University of Newfoundland who will discuss People and Skills for the 21st Century.

"Industry participation in the region's vision for its future growth and prosperity is vital," said Premier Tobin. "I am confident that the representatives will demonstrate that Newfoundland and Labrador is leading the way in many sectors. Even with the challenges created by the collapse of the ground fishery, people are creating new innovative approaches to developing our economy."

"While we are advancing our growth agenda, it is necessary to provide targeted supports as we move through this transition stage and become full contributors to Canada as a whole."

The Premier said that while significant progress has been made in the province's economic development, significant challenges remain. He said that by partnering with the private sector, and cooperating with all levels of government, we can maximize our opportunities and meet our challenges.
