Premier Brian Tobin and Opposition Leader Loyola Sullivan have jointly announced a process for public consultation on the Calgary Declaration for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Premier Tobin and Mr. Sullivan say their parties have agreed to conduct consultations on a district by district basis within the province. In addition, the province will establish a Web site and a 1-800 line to assist in receiving the views of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. This access will build on existing structures and therefore allow consultation to be executed in the most cost-effective manner possible.

"The Leader of the Opposition and I agree that this process of consultation should be grass-roots based. Each member will be responsible for hearing the views of his or her constituents and reporting back to the House of Assembly during debate this fall," said Premier Tobin.

"I have suggested to the Premier that we should allow the people of the province to speak directly to their elected representatives. I believe people are more inclined to participate in this manner than through formal hearings," said Mr. Sullivan.

Premier Tobin and Mr. Sullivan will be urging the MHAs to arrange consultation sessions during the next six weeks so that members will be prepared to actively participate in a debate on a resolution resulting from the Calgary Declaration.
