(Executive Council)

The Honourable A. M. House, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, reported today that "there was a phenomenal outpouring of sympathy from the people of this province over the sudden and tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales."

Throughout the official period of mourning more than 5,000 people signed the Book of Condolences at Government House. In addition, many flowers were placed around the tree that Princess Diana planted on Government House grounds in 1983, and also various cards and messages of sympathy were received.

The Book of Condolences and written expressions of sympathy from this province are being forwarded to the family through Rideau Hall in Ottawa.
