Provincial Co-Ordinator appointed for Voisey's Bay Project

Premier Brian Tobin announced the appointment of a Deputy Minister responsible for the Voisey's Bay Project. William (Bill) Rowat will serve in this position for the next year. He is being seconded from the federal government where he served most recently as the Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. The secondment is under a Memorandum of Understanding for federal-provincial exchanges. Mr. Rowat will co-ordinate provincial activities for the Voisey's Bay project; a similar position existed for the Hibernia project in its early stages.

"I am pleased that the Prime Minister has agreed to loan us such an able and experienced senior official to work on the Voisey's Bay project," said Premier Tobin. "Bill Rowat was a key official who assisted me in the turbot dispute with Spain and the United Nations convention on straddling stocks. This project, by definition, will require close co-operation between the federal and provincial government in areas such as environmental assessment and aboriginal land claims negotiations. Mr. Rowat is uniquely qualified for this position given his extensive federal background and thorough understanding of the issues facing Newfoundland and Labrador today."
