Government responds to requests for funding for referendum debate

Premier Brian Tobin today announced that government will not provide funding for any group, organization or individual to participate in the referendum debate on education. "Government has received formal and informal requests for funding. It would be unfair to respond to selected requests and fiscally irresponsible to respond to all of the many and varied types of requests," said the Premier.

"I believe that it is incumbent upon government to inform all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians of the fundamental new direction being proposed for education. Therefore, government will promote its position because it has a responsibility to do so."

Information provided by government will present the facts and, if necessary, correct any misinformation that is presented in the public. The Premier is encouraging people throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to support government in providing a single school system where all children attend the same school regardless of religious affiliation, where opportunities for religious education and observances are provided.

Government expects others, either individually or through groups and organizations, to enter the debate as they deem appropriate.
