July 21, 1997 (Executive Council) Premier Brian Tobin wishes to congratulate Sheila Osborne on her victory this evening in the St. John's West by election. "I am disappointed but not surprised by tonight's outcome, by election results traditionally differ from the governing party. It was a close race with a low voter turnout and the government respects the decision of the people," said Premier Tobin. "I welcome Ms. Osborne's presence in the House of Assembly and look forward to working together to serve the interests of St. John's West." Premier Tobin, on behalf of the government and the Liberal Party, would also like to congratulate Tom Moore on a solid showing and a strong campaign. "Mr. Moore demonstrated a clear understanding of the issues, and a commitment to this province and its people. I commend him on a job well done." The premier also noted the efforts of Pat Lynch and the New Democratic Party on the completion of a substantial, issues- oriented campaign.
