Premier Tobin shuffles Cabinet

Premier Brian Tobin today announced changes in five Cabinet portfolios. Charles J. Furey has been appointed Minister of Mines and Energy, filling the position vacated by Rex Gibbons earlier this year. Judy Foote has been appointed Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology. Beaton Tulk has been appointed Minister of Development and Rural Renewal, and also assumes the Chairmanship of the Cabinet Committee on Rural Revitalization and becomes a member of the Priorities and Planning Committee of Cabinet. Kevin Aylward has been appointed Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods. Joining the Cabinet is Oliver Langdon, M.H.A. for Fortune Bay - Cape La Hune, who has been appointed Minister of Environment and Labour. All appointments became effective today following a swearing-in ceremony at Government House, presided over by His Honour, the Lieutenant-Governor, Dr. Max House.

At the same time, Premier Tobin announced the appointment of Percy Barrett, M.H.A. for Bellevue, as Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier. Melvin Penney, M.H.A. for Lewisporte, is promoted to Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, from Assistant Deputy Speaker. Doug Oldford, M.H.A. for Trinity North, has been appointed Assistant Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly.
