Premier announces date for St. John's West by-election

Premier Brian Tobin today announced that a by-election will be held in St. John's West on July 21 to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Dr. Rex Gibbons on April 29.

"We had to delay the calling of this by-election because of the recent federal election, and the Royal visit," said Premier Tobin. "This is the first opportunity we have had in light of those events."

A summer by-election was necessary due to Dr Gibbons' resignation. According to legislation, a by-election must be called within 60 days of the effective date of vacancy, and the vote must be held within 30 days of the call.
