(Executive Council)

The following is being distributed at the request of Jack Harris, MHA - Signal Hill - Quidi Vidi:

A Memorial Service to honour Stanley Knowles will be held Wednesday, June 18, at Gower St. United Church at 12:30 p.m. Reverend Dr. Marion Pardy will preside at the service. Knowles died Monday, June 9, nine days before his 89th birthday.

"We are holding this service to celebrate his life and his tireless dedication to social justice in this country," says Jack Harris, Leader of the NDP.

Knowles, a United Church minister, was a founding member of the New Democratic Party and was elected Member of Parliament from 1942 to 1984.

"His relentless fight to ensure adequate pensions for seniors was one of his major accomplishments," says Harris. "Stanley Knowles has been called one of Canada's Great Parliamentarians and certainly made this a better country for all."

As recognition of his life-long dedication to the rights of democracy and our Parliamentary system, he was made an Honourary Officer of the House of Commons.
