NOTE TO EDITORS:

A training workshop for a variety of professionals on emergency response to disasters and traumatic events will be held this Friday, June 13 at the Littledale Conference Centre in St. John's. The workshop features guest speaker Ray Lafond, an Emergency Social Services Planner, researcher, writer and trainer with Health Canada. Mr. Lafond has more than 20 years experience in this field.

Media interested in speaking with Mr. Lafond or workshop participants are welcome to stop by the conference centre between noon and 1:15 p.m. Friday.

The workshop is sponsored by the Department of Human Resources and Employment. Participants of the workshop include social workers, guidance counsellors, psychologists and law enforcement officers. Community agencies such as the Red Cross, the Health Care Corporation, RNC, RCMP, School Boards and others will also be in attendance.

The participants will identify physical, social and emotional reactions and needs of disaster survivors of all ages and determine programs and skills required to help disaster survivors. The particpants will also learn how to plan, operate and manage multi- disciplinary, community-based psychosocial response teams and develop appropriate activities to help individuals, families and communities overcome possible effects of traumatic events.

This is the second of a series of workshops being conducted around the province. Workshops will be held in Corner Brook on June 16, Grand Falls-Windsor, June 18 and Harbour Grace on June 20.
