Provincial government and CUPE reach two pay equity agreements

Paul Dicks, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, announced today that the provincial government has reached two pay equity agreements with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).

"Government is committed to pay equity and we are demonstrating this again today. We are taking measures to significantly narrow the gap between male and female salaries," said Mr. Dicks. "The government has been thorough in reviewing job classifications and salaries within the public sector, and we have reached these agreements through a joint management and union consultation process. This is a progressive step in ensuring that pay equity is implemented throughout the public service."

The two agreements with CUPE include the Public Libraries Board, and Government House. They cover approximately 120 employees in female dominated job classifications at an annual cost of $290,000, and will be implemented over a two year period. Upon the full implementation of the adjustment, employees in many classifications will receive significant increases in their yearly salaries. For example a Clerk I will receive a gross salary increase per year of $2,700, and a Domestic Worker would receive an increase of $2,600.

In addition to those already signed, these agreements bring pay equity to more than 11,000 employees in female dominated classifications who by the year 2000 will receive approximately $40 million in pay equity wage adjustments.

The pay equity adjustment will be phased in two stages. The first will be effective October 1, 1996 and the second on April 1, 1998.
