(Executive Council)

Premier Tobin today sends condolences to the family of the late Gregory Power who passed away earlier today at the age of 88 years. Mr. Power was a close associate of Premier Smallwood, and a leading supporter of Confederation during the National Convention of 1946.

"On behalf of all Members of the House of Assembly, I extend deepest sympathy to Mrs. Mary Power and the seven Power children on the passing of a husband and father, and respected politician. Mr. Power's views, and the views of his family, on Confederation were well known, and forward-thinking. His vision for Newfoundland and Labrador as a part of a united Canada, was critical to the province's economic and social well-being."

Mr. Power served the people of Newfoundland and Labrador well through the years. He held a number of portfolios during the Smallwood administration, including Minister of Finance and Minister of Highways. He was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame in 1983, and was also a well known writer and poet.
