Businesses now charge provincial government HST on taxable supplies of goods and services

The provincial government confirmed that businesses must charge the provincial government and all Crown corporations Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on the purchase of taxable goods and services. This is a change from past practice wherein the provincial government did not pay any Goods and Services Tax (GST) to businesses.

In tendering on government contracts, however, businesses should not include HST. Any applicable HST will be added by the business when it invoices government.

Individuals requiring more information on this matter should contact the Office of the Comptroller General at (709) 729-3929, or by writing at P.O. Box 8700, St. John's, NF, A1B 4J6. For information on the HST, call Revenue Canada at the nearest Tax Services Office, or toll-free within the Atlantic Provinces at 1-800-959-5525.
