April 7, 1997 (Executive Council) New appointments in the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Premier Brian Tobin today announced several changes of senior officials in the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture. Jerry Ward is appointed as Assistant Deputy Minister, Aquaculture. Mr. Ward's most recent position was President of Connors Bros. Inc., Brocton, Mass. Glenn Blackwood is appointed as Assistant Deputy Minister, Fisheries (Acting). Mr. Blackwood most recently served as Director of Resource Analysis with the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture. JERRY WARD Jerry Ward has worked in the fish processing industry since 1980. His involvement in that industry began at P. Janes and Sons Limited, Hants Harbour, where he worked as general sales manager before being promoted to manager of finance and administration in 1983. Mr. Ward went on to work with Connors Bros. Limited, Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick in 1987. He served in various capacities, including general sales manager, vice president, and finally president of Connors Bros. Inc., the company's U.S. subsidiary. Mr. Ward was one of the principal individuals involved in the development of Connors Bros. aquaculture operations. He was a member of the executive committee which developed that company's policy and strategic approach to aquaculture. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Glenn Blackwood began his career with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in 1979 as a program coordinator. He went on to the provincial Department of Fisheries in 1980, and has filled positions which include technical advisor in the Harvesting Division, marine biologist with the Planning Services Division, and resource planning supervisor. Most recently he served as director of resource analysis with the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture. Mr. Blackwood has served as the provincial government's representative on the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC) since 1993. He holds a Masters of Arts degree in Fisheries Management, as well as a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Marine Biology, both from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
