Government allocates $7 million dollars for school construction on Labrador Coast

Premier Brian Tobin today announced funding for the construction of a new school at Rigolet and an expansion to the school at Nain in coastal Labrador.

"Nain and Rigolet are isolated coastal communities and the needs in these areas are well known and have been identified for some time," said Premier Tobin. "The government feels that it is time for a commitment to the people of these communities to provide adequate school facilities."

Premier Tobin, the Minister responsible for Labrador, Ernest McLean, and Torngat MHA, Wally Andersen, jointly made the announcement today at a news conference in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The Minister Responsible for Labrador, Ernest McLean, said the Labrador portion of the province has a bright future in light of Voisey's Bay and other mineral opportunities, tourism, and so on.

"New schools, with modern state of the art facilities, will allow coastal Labrador students to compete on a level playing field with students throughout the province," said Mr. McLean.

Planning for the Hopedale school is already underway, and with this commitment today, planning for the other two projects at Rigolet and Nain will commence immediately. Actual work will begin in the upcoming construction season. The Rigolet project involves construction of a brand new school, while in Nain a new building will be added to the school to increase student capacity.

The MHA for Torngat, Wally Andersen, said government recognizes the important role Labrador will play in the future development of our province, and is committed to Labrador geting its fair share, not only in education, but in all other areas as well.
