March 5, 1997
(Executive Council)

The following is being distributed at the request of Land Forces Atlantic Area:

A company size group of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment will travel to Camp Blanding, Florida, to conduct a 10 day training exercise with the U.S. Army National Guard. The 1st Battalion, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment was selected for this honour over all militia units in Atlantic Canada by Major General R.R. Crabbe, Commander, Land Forces Atlantic Area. The battalion was declared the best unit to participate in the 1996 annual summer concentration, winning the "Paragon Soldier" award and with it the privilege to participate in a small unit exchange visit with the U.S. Army National Guard over the Easter holiday period.

Seventy soldiers of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment from across Newfoundland and Labrador will deploy to Fort Blanding by C-130 Hercules aircraft to conduct infantry training in fighting in built-up areas. In exchange, a company selected from the U.S. Army National Guard will participate in Land Forces Atlantic Area's annual summer concentration, ARCON '97, at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown.

The Paragon Soldier award was presented for the first time this year. The soldiers of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment trained hard to win this award, and have lived up to their motto, "Better Than The Best!". Newfoundland can be proud of their accomplishment.

Contact: Capt. Sean Dwyer, Adjutant 1st Battalion, The Royal Newfoundland Regiment, (709) 570-4900, extension 4593 or 4555.
