Meetings on Churchill Falls during Team Canada

Premier Brian Tobin confirmed today that discussions have occurred between Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec on the question of the Churchill Falls hydro dispute, during the course of the Team Canada trade mission to Asia. "There have been three discussions at the officials level during the past week to explore the parameters for a potential negotiation between our two provinces. Mr. Bouchard and I have met and directed our officials to conduct exploratory talks. Further discussions will be held in Canada," said Mr. Tobin.

Premier Tobin has cautioned that these latest talks are very preliminary and may or may not lead to formal negotiations. "I have always said that the problem we have can be resolved by dialogue. The possible solutions should represent a win for both provinces. We both need investment. We both need jobs. In the interest of giving this initiative some chance at success, I will not be commenting in any detail unless there is something substantive to report," stated the premier.

The premier said he'll be reporting to Cabinet on the talks upon his return to the province. The discussions held during the Team Canada Asian Tour were conducted by Malcolm Rowe, Provincial Clerk of the Executive Council, and Secretary to Cabinet, and Andre Caille, Chairman of Quebec Hydro.
