Team Canada highlights - West Coast company signs International contract

EDM International of Deer Lake, in partnership with Canora (Asia) Incorporated, signed a $17.6 million (CDN) contract today with Udonthani Industrial Zone of Bangkok, Thailand, for the design and construction of Waste and Waste Water Treatment Systems and a Solid Waste Disposal System. Canora Inc. is a consortium of 33 Canadian firms set up to do business in South East Asia. EDM International Limited, as one of the largest shareholders in Canora Inc., will provide the required engineering services including design and engineering supervision for the construction of a "turnkey" contract with Udonthani Industrial Zone Limited.

Premier Brian Tobin, in Bangkok as part of the Team Canada Mission, joined Brad Chaulk, president of EDM International Limited, for the contract signing ceremony. The project consists of environmental infrastructure systems for a new industrial estate in Udonthani, Thailand. EDM's lead responsibility for the contract is worth $1,710,000 (CDN) and the design and construction is projected to take 18 months. Work will commence February 1, 1997.

EDM International Limited also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UGC Engineering Co. of Bangkok, Thailand, whereby both firms agree to cooperate in pursuit of business opportunities in the Waste Water Treatment Sector. UGC will provide the local engineering capability and EDM will provide the technology and specialized engineering design requirements. For large scale projects the group will promote a highly effective Canadian technology produced in Quebec. For smaller scale operations, the group will use the BioGreen Technology, currently produced here in Newfoundland.

During the visit EDM also advised of their intention to establish a permanent office in Thailand. Over the next three years, the company's annual sales in Thailand are projected to grow to $5 million. Brad Chaulk, president of EDM International, said: "The opportunities in Asia in the areas of environmental technologies and engineering services are immense. EDM is committed to tapping into this huge marketplace and the Team Canada Mission, by demonstrating the support of both provincial and federal levels of government, has established significant credibility with our Asian partners."

Premier Tobin commented: "I was extremely pleased to participate with EDM in the launch of what will undoubtedly become a strong foothold in Asia. The advanced capabilities of Newfoundland companies to solve engineering and environmental difficulties is bringing significant recognition to this province in the global marketplace."
