Environmental Assessment Bulletin Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.
The proponent proposes to construct and operate a hydroclave steam sterilization system and a small pathological-type incinerator capable of disposing of biomedical waste. The proposed location is #1 Austin Street in O'Leary Industrial Park in the City of St. John's. The technical aspects of this proposal are identical to a project registered by the same proponent on March 27, 1997 for a site on Mount Scio Road. The previous proposal was released from the assessment process on August 18 after the submission of an Environmental Preview Report. The current proposal includes the transportation, treatment and disposal of biomedical waste for the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Care Association. The proposed site will essentially not require any outside modifications as the treatment process, including the off loading of waste and the loading of residue, occurs entirely within a separate 5,000 square foot area of the existing building. The interior of the building will be slightly modified to accommodate the new equipment, but the overall structure and appearance will not be changed. This project was registered on December 24, 1997, public comments are due by January 30, 1998, and the minister's decision is due on February 7, 1998. A guide to the Environmental Assessment Process is available from the Department of Environment and Labour. The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known.
