Environmental Assessment Bulletin Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item
The proponent has submitted the Environmental Preview Report (EPR) for the above noted undertaking. Anyone wishing to review the document and submit comments may do so before January 23, 1998. The minister's decision on the acceptability of the EPR and whether to release the project or require an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is due on January 31, 1998. Copies of the EPR are available at the Environmental Assessment Division, St. John's office.
The minister has appointed an Environmental Assessment Committee pursuant to Subsection 2 of Section 22 of the Environmental Assessment Act, RSN 1990, c. E-14 to advise him on scientific and technical matters related to the project and to prepare technical and scientific reports. The following provincial and federal agencies will be represented on the committee:
The chairperson, in consultation with the committee, will now prepare guidelines to be issued to the proponent for the preparation of the Terms of Reference (TOR) for the EIS. There will be a public review and comment period for both the TOR and the EIS. The proponent will hold public meetings in Labrador communities in preparing the EIS.
