Environmental Assessment Bulletin Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.
The proponent proposes to renovate an existing fish plant at Sandy Point, Baie Verte for use as a marine oil processing plant and a seal and cow hide tannery. The proposed site can be accessed via route 410 from the Trans Canada Highway and along Water Street to Sandy Point. The undertaking will consist of an oil processing storage area, seal pelt procurement centre, tanning facility, raw pelt storage area, offices, parking lot, storage yard, oil storage shed and a product storage area. The facility is designed to process 500,000 kg of marine oil per year and 500 hides per day. Construction is anticipated to take place over a 4-6 month period and is tentatively scheduled to be completed by spring 1998. The project was registered on December 12, 1997, public comments must be received by January 16, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on January 26, 1998.
