Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

NEW UNDERTAKING REGISTERED

Paradise River to Cartwright Road
Proponent: Department of Works Services and Transportation

The proponent proposes to construct a two lane gravel surface road between Paradise River and Cartwright, a distance of approximately 31 kilometres, which will link the communities to the proposed Trans Labrador Highway. The road will connect to an existing road south of Cartwright and will follow an existing ATV/skidoo trail between Paradise River and Cartwright. Construction is tentatively scheduled to commence in 1998. The project was registered on November 21, 1997, public comments must be received by December 26, 1997 and the minister's decision is due on January 5, 1997.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT REQUIRED

Trans Labrador Highway from Red Bay to Paradise River
Proponent: Department of Works, Services and Transportation

The minister has directed the proponent to prepare and submit an Environmental Impact Statement to determine if the project may have significant environmental impacts. The required EIS will include the section of the Trans Labrador Highway from Red Bay to Paradise River. The road from Paradise River to Cartwright has been registered as a separate undertaking. A governmental Environmental Assessment Committee will be appointed to meet with the proponent to elaborate on the environmental concerns to be addressed in the EIS.

NO ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT REQUIRED

The minister has decided that an environmental impact statement is not required for the following undertakings which have recently been registered and examined by government and the public. The undertakings are released subject to other regulatory and permitting requirements.
