Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.
The proponent proposes an amendment to timber harvesting in the Five Year Operating Plan for Management District 18 (Roddickton). District 18 is roughly the northern half of the Great Northern Peninsula. This amendment is for an area commonly referred to as the Horsechops operating area. The Horsechops amendment covers 54 hectares and includes 4,068 m3 of merchantable timber. All timber will be harvested from existing roads. The project was registered on November 13, 1997, public comments must be received before December 19, 1997 and the minister's decision is due on December 28, 1997.
The proponent proposes to construct a class "C" access road from Tower Road in the Town of St. Alban's to Roti Bay, a distance of approximately 10 km. The cleared right-of-way will be approximately 10 km long and 20 metres in width with a travelling surface of approximately five metres wide. The road will be operated by the Newfoundland Salmonid Growers Association on a year round basis to transport personnel and materials to the fish overwintering site in Roti Bay. Construction is tentatively scheduled to be completed by August 1998. The minister has decided that an environmental impact statement is not required for the Tilley Cove Mussel Processing Facility which was recently registered and examined by government and the public. This undertaking is released subject to other regulatory and permitting requirements. A guide to the Environmental Assessment Process is available from the Department of Environment and Labour.
