Ministers of the environment to meet in St. John's in January 98

Oliver Langdon, Minister of Environment and Labour, today announced that the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) will hold its annual meeting in St. John's in January 1998. Mr. Langdon is the current president of CCME, which is made up of environment ministers from each of the provinces, territories and the federal government. The presidency of CCME rotates among the ministers on an annual basis.

"I am looking forward to welcoming my colleagues to St. John's," said Mr. Langdon. "We will be using our time together to make progress on the harmonization of environmental programs, and to consider ways of better coordinating our efforts in areas of common concern such as the management of toxic substances."

The CCME Annual Meeting is normally held in November, but has been delayed this year to enable ministers of the environment to complete preparations for the Third Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Climate Change, which is being held in Kyoto, Japan, in early December.

The exact dates and locations for the meeting of environment ministers will be set in the coming days.
