October 24, 1997 (Environment and Labour) The following is being distributed at the request of the Human Rights Commission: The Human Rights Commission reports that a board of inquiry will commence on Tuesday, October 28, 1997, into a complaint filed with the commission against Right Futures Project and the Department of Social Services. The complaint was filed with the commission in August 1996 by Michelle Jones of Corner Brook. Ms. Jones, who was employed as a live-in supervisor responsible for providing personal care in the home, had her employment terminated while she was absent from work because of illness. Ms. Jones filed a complaint with the commission alleging the termination of her employment constituted discrimination on the basis of mental disability contrary to provisions of the Human Rights Code. The adjudicator for the complaint is Gillian D. Butler, Q.C. of St. John's. Barry Fleming will present the complaint on behalf of the Human Rights Commission and Nick Avis of Corner Brook will be representing the Right Futures Project. The hearing which is open to the public will commence at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28, in the Tudor Room at the Glynmill Inn, Cobb Lane, Corner Brook.
